Nitro and Predator laptops ship with genuinely capable cooling — dual fans, multiple heat pipes, and on the higher-end Predators, some of the most aggressive stock thermal designs in any gaming laptop. Which is exactly why owners notice so quickly when things go wrong: frame rates fall off a cliff mid-session, the fans scream at full tilt for minutes at a time, and the keyboard deck gets too hot to rest your hands on.
Why it happens to every gaming laptop eventually
Three things degrade in parallel:
- Dust packs into the fin stacks. Not a light coating — a felt-like mat that blocks airflow almost completely. The fans then spin harder against a wall, which is the roar you’re hearing.
- Thermal paste dries out. The factory paste between the CPU/GPU dies and the heat pipes loses effectiveness after a few years of heat cycling. Once it does, heat simply isn’t reaching the cooling system, no matter how clean the fans are.
- Fan bearings wear. A Nitro fan that clicks, buzzes, or surges up and down at idle is on its way out, and a fan that dies mid-game takes your thermal headroom with it.
The result is thermal throttling: the machine protecting itself by slowing down. Your hardware isn’t getting worse — it’s getting hotter, and defending itself.
What our thermal service actually includes
“Blowing it out with compressed air” is not a thermal service. On the bench, a Nitro/Predator service means a full bottom-panel strip-down, both fans out and cleaned (or replaced if bearings are gone), fin stacks cleared properly, old paste cleaned off the dies with solvent, fresh quality thermal compound applied, thermal pads checked and replaced where they’ve gone crumbly, and a before/after load test so we can show you the temperature delta rather than ask you to take our word for it.
On machines that ship with liquid metal from the factory (some Predator Helios models), the rules are different — liquid metal requires specific handling and must never be mixed with standard paste, which is exactly the kind of detail that separates a workshop job from a YouTube-tutorial job.
When to book it
If your Acer is more than two years old and any of this sounds familiar — sudden frame drops, constant max fans, hot palm rest, or a machine that used to run quiet — it’s due.
